Welcome

Construction of Brooklyn Bridge Park has begun. Over the next year construction on Pier 1 and Pier 6 will be expedited and we expect to welcome visitors to the first open sections of the park in winter 2009.

We are pleased to announce that the Brooklyn Flea will be located at Brooklyn Bridge Plaza this summer. See the below press release for more information.

Marine Work and scour protection has begun at the site. We will be placing stones along the western edge of Pier 1 to prevent sediment on the river bottom from washing away with currents and also provide support to the existing bulkhead. These stones, originally from Albany, were transported by barge down the Hudson River to the site.

Bulk Fill Arrival on Pier 1

Mounds are forming at Pier 1

Bulk fill at Pier 1

Fill from the MTA's East Side Access project continues to arrive on site. To date, 32,000 cubic yards of bulk fill has already been placed as we quickly approach the total 45,000 cubic yards of bulk fill that will create the topography on Pier 1. 15,000 cubic yards of horticultural soil will then be placed on top of this fill to create lawns and planting beds. The highest point at Pier 1 will be twenty feet above the existing pier deck, creating new views to Manhattan and the New York Harbor.

Trees have arrived!

Trees have arrived at Brooklyn Bridge Park!

Last week the first trees began to arrive at the site and are being planted in a temporary nursery created on the Pier 3 uplands. This will allow them to adjust to the site before they are planted at Pier 1 and 6. Over the next few months, these trees will be carefully watered and receive managed care to promote healthy root growth before they are planted. Thus far, we have received a number of species including Honeylocusts, Magnolias, Lindens, Catalpas, Serviceberries, Sweetgums, London Planes, and several species of Oaks.
